Plenty of Carmel neighborhoods, from Brookshire and Laurelwood to the newer streets west of Towne Road, have homes where plain gray concrete looks a little unfinished next to stone and brick. Decorative concrete closes that gap without the cost and upkeep of pavers. And because many HOAs here review exterior changes, the subtler decorative finishes are often easier to get approved than bold stamped patterns.

Exposed Aggregate

After the pour, the surface paste is washed or retarded away to reveal the stones in the mix. The result is textured, grippy and good at hiding tire marks and dirt, which is why it's popular on Carmel driveways. Aggregate choice changes the look entirely: river gravel gives warm browns and tans, while crushed stone reads grayer and more uniform. Ask to see a finished sample made with the supplier's actual mix.

Integral Color

Pigment mixed into the concrete colors it all the way through, so chips and wear don't expose gray. Charcoal, tan and warm gray are the most common choices. Color can look different with every finish and every sealer, so view a sample slab, not a brochure swatch.

Acid and Water-Based Stains

Stains are applied to cured concrete. Acid stains react with the cement for a mottled, marbled look; water-based stains offer a wider palette and more uniform color. Both suit patios and covered porches. They need a sealer and periodic resealing outdoors.

Saw-Cut Patterns and Borders

Decorative saw cuts (diamonds, squares, a tile grid) add pattern while also acting as control joints. Borders in a contrasting finish frame a driveway, walk or patio. A smooth troweled band around an exposed aggregate field is a classic Carmel look. Borders are also an inexpensive way to dress up a plain broom slab. For full pattern imprints, see stamped patios.

Resurfacing Overlays

If existing concrete is structurally sound but stained or scaled, a polymer-modified overlay can be troweled, stamped or stenciled over it. Overlays aren't a fix for heaving or badly cracked slabs. A contractor will check before recommending one. See concrete repair.

Where Each Finish Works Best

  • Driveways: exposed aggregate or broom with a smooth border; both handle tires and snow shovels well.
  • Front walks and steps: exposed aggregate or light broom for grip; a colored border ties them to the drive.
  • Covered porches and screened rooms: stains and saw-cut patterns shine where they're protected from weather.
  • Patios: any of these, plus stamping if your HOA allows it.

Mixing two finishes, such as aggregate in the field and a smooth band at the edges, usually looks more custom than one finish everywhere.

Sealing and Care

Decorative surfaces look best and last longest with sealer, typically renewed every few years. Use sand rather than harsh deicers in winter, especially during the first season, and clean oil spots promptly.

HOA Approval

Color and finish choices are exactly what many Carmel architectural committees review. Submit a sample or spec sheet before ordering. Our permits and HOA page has general guidance.

What It Costs

As a typical central Indiana estimate, exposed aggregate often runs a few dollars per square foot more than plain broom finish, and colored or stained concrete similarly; decorative borders are priced by the linear foot. These are planning ranges, not quotes. See Carmel concrete costs.
